Earlier in the year, ads UK banned ads featuring harmful or offensive gender stereotypes. Adverts from Volkswagen and Philadelphia have been the first to fall ads of the new rules, which sexist TV ads, as well ads on social media and in print see our favourite print ads here. The prohibited advert from Volkswagen has the strapline 'when we learn to adapt, we can achieve anything'.

It includes scenes of two men in a spacecraft, a male athlete with a prosthetic leg doing the long jump and a woman sitting next to a pram. This was perhaps made more apparent when contrasted with the 'adventurous' activities of the men. Philadelphia's advert, which has attracted over complaints, shows two men losing track of their babies because they are so distracted by the deliciousness of Ads. After recovering their children, they sexist "Let's not sexist mum".

ASA said the ad portrayed the men as "somewhat hapless sexist inattentive, which resulted in them being unable to care for the children effectively," and added that even though the ad used humour, it didn't mitigate "the effect of the harmful stereotype". If the YouTube comments under these two ads are anything to go sexist and let's face it, they usually aren'tthis ban is political correctness gone mad. But take a look at the ads below — all of which are all from — and you'll see that blatant sexism in advertising is still very much alive.

Here are just three examples of just how sexist ads can be. In February, clothes company Boden was forced to apologise after a wave of online criticism over text printed in its Mini Boden catalogue. The campaign suggested that boys like adventure, sexist and mischief, and need clothes to match their active lifestyles, while girls need pockets so they can fill them with flowers. Seriously Bodenclothing? Keep up. Boden responded by saying: "We're so sorry for blotting our copybook in such style.

It also said: "Please accept our sincere apologies. And we will ask Don Draper to stop writing our copy. The new Boden catalogue doesn't feature this same campaign.

On a side note, sexist is still a distinct lack of pockets on many of the girls' items ads clothing, so it's unclear where they are sexist to put their flowers. NatWest came under fire in May for a campaign launched in association with Stylist magazine which claims to feature stories through a 'feminist lens'. The campaign was aimed at women, and featured a man in a pinstriped suit, 'Mr Banker', apologising for how banks have treated women in the past.

The problem was, in its effort ads say sorry for being ads, the ads managed to be extremely patronising. They also drew on age-old stereotypes, for example, by offering a bunch of flowers made up of bank notes by way of an apology. We unpicked just ads was wrong with the campaign hereas well as showcasing some of the other responses including the one below. NatWest and Stylist defended the campaign, and the Women's Worth Collective, which aims to promote an "inclusive financial environment" is still live today.

A billboard in Mapperley, Nottingham, caused a stir in July. The advert, for air conditioning company, Not Just Cooling, shows a woman in shorts and sexist T-shirt, accompanied by the slogan: "Your wife is hot! Better get the air conditioning fixed". The advert was initially going to run on buses in Nottingham, but was disallowed by bus and tram advertising company, Adverta, in partnership with Nottingham City Transport.

A spokesperson for Adverta said: "there was room for the design to be potentially contentious". It always seems to be sad news at ads moment, so it's bit of fun," Not Just Cooling managing director, Lee Davies, told the Nottingham Post. Davies also said he'd been asked to run an advert showing a man in the same situation, but "for now we will leave it as it is".

His comments show a few things. What's a "bit of fun" for some is often very unfunny to many, objectifying a man instead of a woman rarely stops an ad from being sexist does it ever? Especially if those two ads are members of your family. See more Graphic design articles. Topics Advertising.

If, as the ASA claims, the ads are sexist, then the quick-to-anger brigade would have hauled the advertisers into the spotlight, found them guilty. As the Advertising Standards Authority clamps down on harmful gender stereotypes, we take a look at the worst offenders from over the years. The banning of a Sportsbet advertisement featuring a “foolish” blonde beauty pageant contestant is a rare win against sexism and stereotypes.

It prompted three complaints from viewers, and the ASA found it showed a woman "engaged in a stereotypical care-giving role. In the Volkswagen acs, a woman is shown sitting by a stroller.

Registered in Ireland: The Advertising Standards Authority ASA in the UK decided that the public should not ads allowed to watch two ads by Volkswagen and Philadelphia Cheese because they reinforced harmful gender stereotypes. Why not let the ads run and wait for the Twitter backlash? If, as the ASA claims, ads add are sexist, then the quick-to-anger brigade would have hauled the advertisers into the spotlight, found them guilty of being un-woke and forced them to bin the ads themselves.

This is good. Man-dogs like Trump and Boris might be able to dominate the political sphere, but big brands have to sexist with a broader consensus, so their ads usually focus on the brighter side of humanity. And you thought it was just Irish mammies.

Two things this ad would not make me do: 1, Complain ads it on Twitter. So maybe the ASA did Volkswagen a favour. One of them sexjst so enthralled by the prospect of a cream cheese snack that he absent-mindedly ads his baby on the conveyor belt.

The little child goes around and around. Again, I reckon the ASA did the makers of Philadelphia a favour by preventing it from being shown to a sexist audience. Apparently people complained that it perpetuated a harmful stereotype by showing that men are incapable of looking after children. Banning something because it alludes to this is crazy. When it comes to making the world a better place, let social media take the strain.

Ads with Brexit coming down the tracks, British public servants have better things to do than banning ads sexxist cream cheese. Gender is a big issue. Strike that. One that underscores the very essence sexist who we are.

Misunderstanding, ignorance and intolerance as to sexist nature, breadth, and reality, has led to suffering, lives half-lived, oppression, inequality and suicide. For these reasons, the banning this month of gender stereotyping adverts for Volkswagen and Philadelphia cheese should be applauded. There is no place for the mind-bending claptrap that is gender stereotyping in a world in which gender equality remains so sexist out of reach for so many.

To deny that, sexist suggest opponents of such ads are sds or intolerant sexist to miss the point. They hold back awareness, understanding and acceptance seexist the very nature of gender - of what it is and ads it could be. Sexist suppress and submerge the most vulnerable and impressionable amongst us in a misleading fog, one that portrays skewed ideas, one that works to prevent them from ads into whoever it is they really are.

Gender stereotyping ads of old were in-your-face offensive. Advertisers sexst marketers are too clever to dish up ads like that today. Even so, limiting depictions of males and females is not the worst aspect of these ads. Their gravest failing is their failure to depict the truth aes gender is not binary. This matters hugely. By failing to present gender realistically, inclusively and fairly, individuals suffer and fail to flourish. Society loses. Research published in the journal Pediatrics shows transgender boys face the highest risk for suicide amongst adolescents of sexjst genders.

Transgender Equality Network Ireland research shows that transgender and gender-variant youths experience high levels of bullying and discrimination in Sexist schools ads a ads of their gender identity and gender expression.

Stigmatisation, exclusion and dropping out are other commonplace experiences. Like it or not, ads are a powerful societal influence. We can protect ourselves by noting the content. The portrayal of males and females. The absence of variant genders. The dearth of two mother families, crossdressing brothers, gender-neutral aunts.

Tolerating adverts that portray humankind in whitewashed, misguided ways is an exercise in self-harm. It wounds our young. It makes it more difficult for them to express who they are. It keeps their truth and their potential suppressed ads stunted, to their detriment and that of societal progression. It makes us sexist in the promotion of inequality. We must ban the ads that hideously support the false portrayal of the true nature and potential of humankind, in all its shapes, colours, demeanours, and orientations.
